Day 5 - Grasmere to Patterdale and Glenridding

I published yesterday's blog just before supper yesterday so I will pick up the story from there. We were to return to Grasmere for supper at the pub of many beers and ales we had scouted out but everyone felt a little tired so we decided to just go downstairs to our own pub/restaurant. A good thing! Soon after we sat down, it started to rain heavily with very strong winds which persisted all night. We would have been very wet had we gone to town (about a km or so walk into town) .

Chris and I ordered the Cumberland Curl sausage and mashed potatoes. A rather odd presentation that had everyone, especially the vegetarians howling with laughter.

Quote of the day - Chris - "I'm not eating that"

And now today's story. We had another nice breakfast and then started on today's trek to Patterdale. It was a partly cloudy and windy day, about 15C in the morning.

The route....

The first four km were a steady climb up to Grisedale Tarn (Tarn is what they call mountain lakes).

We passed a very small hydroelectric station.

We are heading up to that notch between the two hills, about a 2000 ft elevation gain.

The trail followed the main stream which ran down the valley and featured this waterfall near the top.

Looking back toward Grasmere as we reached the top...

Reaching the summit, we were treated to this view of Grisedale Tarn.

As we started our descent, there were more great views of the Grisedale Valley.

Lots of sheep grazing the slopes...

There were miles of stone fences as we neared the bottom approaching Patterdale.

Our B&B for tonight was in the neighbouring town of Glenridding, about another 1.5 km down the road. We managed to stop at a marina for some ice cream before checking into The Beech House.

A very enjoyable day. The hike distance was about 13 km and the trail conditions pretty good for the most part so a lot fewer sore body parts today. Now, off to find a pub shortly to continue our quest to see how many different beers we can sample. I believe our current total between the three guys is 25.
